Child-Centered Education

Why Child Centered?

A child-centered education aims to base each student's education on their physical, psychosocial, and cognitive development. Just like no two students are the same, no two students learn the same. On Harbor, we strive to teach to multiple intelligences. On any given day, students will be up and actively learning, not just sitting and listening.

Exploring New Opportunities-

We believe that middle school is a time to grow. All students are given the chance to explore new things. Students may take part in music, art, physical education, world language, or even our team play! Each year, students write, direct, and star in a Harbor House play.

Literature Groups-

Each month or so, each teacher selects a book based around a common theme. Themes include plot structure, immigration, World War II, etc. Students are asked to write down their top three choices and are put into groups based on interest and level. This ensures that students both enjoy reading and are still maintaining challenging but achievable goals.
